HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The school year, 1967, marked the opening of one of the first four vocational centers in the state of South Carolina.  The Aiken County Vocational Center, a trade and industrial school, was created to serve students from all high schools in Aiken County.  The first director was R. L. Coffey, formerly director of Special Services and purchasing agent for the school district.  Aiken County's district superintendent in 1966-1967 was C.F. Kneece.  Chairman J.G. McElmurray and Vice-Chairman C.T. Marsh headed the Aiken County Board of Education.

Locally, Minnie B. Kennedy, a strong advocate of vocational education, was instrumental in promoting the need for a vocational center.  She was supported in her efforts by board members T.G McElmurray, G.T. Marsh, B.T. Brinkley, J.R. Barton, J.C. Busbee, B.F. Gunnels, G.V. Mundy, F.S. Eaves, S.H. Boatwright, R.W. Boylston, J.P. Kneece, and Superintendent A.J. Rutland.

During the school year 1986-1987, the name of the school was changed to the Aiken County Career Center.  During the school year 1999-2000, the name of the school was changed to Aiken County Career and Technology Center.
